YOUNG IZZUDDIN THE BEST BET TO BREAK INTO NATIONAL TEAM
By Lim Teik Huat
PETALING JAYA: Youngster Mohd Izzuddin Abdul Rahim is threatening to break the monopoly enjoyed by archers Cheng Chu Sian, Marbawi Sulaiman and Wan Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz in the senior national team.
The 18-year-old made heads turn when he finished fourth in a field of 82 archers in the World Youth Championships in Turkey on Sunday.
Izzuddin reached the boy’s junior recurve semi-finals and was beaten 104-108 by eventual winner Luca Melotto of Italy.
And in the shoot for the bronze, Izzuddin lost 99-113 to another Italian, Mandia Massimiliano, who was the highest placed archer from the qualification rounds. Izzuddin was placed 11th in qualifying and cleared four rounds to reach the semi-finals.
Malaysia had two other qualifiers in Arif Farhan Ibrahim Putra and Liew Tek Wa but they failed to make it past the second round.
The Malaysian girls €” Ismail Fara Wahida, Anuar Fepriyenita and Beatrice Wong €” were eliminated in the first round.
Izzuddin was only 16 when he bagged silver in the cadet category of the last world youth championships in Mexico two years ago.
That was also the year when he emerged as the youngest winner in the Sukma (Malaysia Games) archery competition in Kedah.
Although he finished out of the medals this time, the Penang-born Izzuddin certainly showed his potential and should be seen as a bright prospect to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
Khalmizam believes that Izzuddin will make it to the senior team before the SEA Games next year.
“It is not easy to do well at the world level because you need to shoot consistently over different distances (30m, 50m, 70m and 90m),” he said.
“It is a healthy competition for the national senior team. It is always the three of us competing in senior team events. It is always good to see another archer coming up as an able replacement.”

PERSATUAN MEMANAH KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA
